Segmentation of the asynchronous motor

The segmented stator with plastic overmolding is the answer to rising raw material prices, increased motor performance, and smart production.

In a project with an OEM, SWD AG Stator- und Rotortechnik realized the segmentation of the stator for a traction drive. The process capability and feasibility of segmented stators for large-scale production were impressively demonstrated.

Instead of a classic progressive cut for the stator and rotor plate, the stator was constructed in a segmented fashion. The segments were punched with maximum material utilization, stacked with high precision, and bonded. The already widely used BPS® technology from SWD AG was used for this purpose. The precise and stable segment stacks produced in this way were then added to the full stator. The precision in roundness and diameter achieved is comparable to that of a completely cut stator. The OEM insulated the segmented stator, fitted it with hairpins, and installed it in the motor housing. In addition to the massively reduced material costs, the first performance figures determined on the test bench are convincing and can compete with reference motors of a classic design.
