Extreme material savings

Challenge

The customer, a start-up in the electric motorcycle sector, has developed a fully integrated electric motor. The amount of material used for the lamination stack is very high due to the large diameter. A lot of material is required, which has a correspondingly high carbon footprint and is expensive.

Approach

SWD describes a concept with segmented production of stator and rotor stacks on the basis of DKS®technology. Different materials are possible. The use of segmentation and bonding massively reduces the amount of material used.

Success

The prototype phase is starting soon. SWD uses these technologies every day and they can be transferred to series manufacturing. The finished lamination stacks will be cheaper than the material costs of traditional production in progressive die cutting.

Facts

  • Material used reduced by 80%
  • Different materials possible for stator and rotor
  • Costs of segmented stacks are smaller than material costs in progressive die cutting
